Interview (Q&A Round):

1) What motivated you to start blogging?

I wanted to do freelance writing for a Pune based Newspaper but I was not good enough and was rightly rejected. I thought a blog is a great platform to be heard and to have loyal readers. As I learnt to write better and evolved with it, one day I found my blog featured in the the same publication that had rejected my writing. “It was a dream come true”.

2) What area or topic you generally cover in your blog, any special reason behind it?

I started with personal ramblings but soon realized that there are better things to write about. Also, my outlook towards life changed and I became more socially sensitive and conscious. I think that happens with everyone, sooner or later. But I chose my blog to reflect that and I am glad it happened. I thought a powerful medium will be wasted if I chose to discuss my favorite color and stuff like that on it.

3) Which blogging platform you are using (wordpress, blogspot, bloggers etc), any reason about it?

I use wordpress. And that is because it is free and open source.

4) How frequent you update your blog? How many post your blog is carrying at present?

As much as I hate it, I can be very irregular at blogging. At times I have posted twice a week. On the other hand my posts could be as infrequent as thrice a month. I have about 270 posts spanning 20 categories at present.

5) What tools you use to increase your blog readership and bring people on your blog? Do you use social networking sites?

One can use social networking sites but they seldom help. A good idea to increase your blog readership is to exchange links with like minded bloggers. And that will happen gradually for these are based on mutual relationships among writers. It will also help your blog a great deal if you engage in discussions and exchange ideas with fellow bloggers on your (and their) blog. Bloggers should understand that blogging does not just include updating your blog and telling the world about it but also reading other blogs.

6) Any specific tips you have for new bloggers who want to make it in the blogsphere?

I believe that a writer should be very clear on what her/his blog should be about and things it should stand for. Also, there should be a strong inclination towards writing and devoting quality time to the blog. And most importantly – one should write for herself/himself. The moment you start writing keeping in mind the reaction of the audience, realize that you are on the wrong path.

A word of warning though; the motivation to write turns out to be the blogger’s best friend in the long run and it can be a little tricky to maintain that fire. That is why it is important for a blogger to be a passionate writer, above all else.

7) Do you earn revenue through your blog? If yes, then how a blogger should monetize his / her blog? If no, then any plans in future?

No. And I do not have any plans in the future. My blog is a showcase of my writing and I would be more than willing to write for other publications, if asked for; but from the blog, per se, I have no plans for generating revenue. I might open a blog primarily for programmers/developers and that may not be ad-free, though.

8) What are your other favorite blogs which you follow, can you list the top 5 such blogs?

1. Dilip D’souza at dcubed.blogspot.com

2. Uma Mahadevan Dasgupta at indianwriting.blogsome.com

3. Sonia Faleiro at soniafaleiro.blogspot.com

4. Nilanjana Roy at akhondofswat.blogspot.com

5. www.joelonsoftware.com/

9) According to you what is the one important aspect of blogging that one should follow, if one follows it he/she become a good blogger and ignore it…the world ignore his/her blog?

I think it is important to be clear on the stands that you are going to take. Since this is a public platform (unless you want it to be otherwise), the blog showcases what you believe in. As your audience grows, you will encounter differences of opinion on many issues. It would be required that you respect others for what they are while standing your ground. Oh and if you make a mistake, be willing to accept it. The idea is to be honest with yourself, all the way.
