Interview (Q&A Round)

Q. What motivated you to start blogging?

I had a keen interest in having an online presence and voicing out my own opinion on various topics. It started off with reading lots of online content that was available for me. I was lucky to be surrounded by like minded friends who actively discussed technology, pop-culture, music, movies and sci-fi. My interest in these areas motivated me to blog on them. I started blogging on BlogSpot in late 2005, and in a way, I believe it has been an awesome journey so far. Making friends with fellow bloggers from all over the world and discussing my favourite stuff and getting honest and genuine feedback -that’s brilliant, isn’t it.

Q. Tell us in detail about your blog, your idea and how it can benefit others?

I regularly write on two of my blogs. I wanted to keep it under one domain, but the topics they cover were too widespread. So, including both of them in one would have been unwise.

OneKnightStands is my take on Pop culture. It is where I voice out my opinions as ‘reviews’ on movies, music, tv, anime etc. I believe I write it with a personal emotion of how I feel about any given topic of discussion. So, the tone of the post tends to be more satirical humour or plain and simple appreciation. Well, as far as public benefit is concerned, I guess, I spread the awesomeness of lots of stuff that I come across which my friends wouldn’t have otherwise got to know about.

My other blog Techkeyla is a tech-discussion blog in which I discuss tech issues, social media, tips and tricks on web design, Excel coding etc. The idea of this blog is to get a tech opinion conveyed to the reader in as straightforward way as possible. The topics discussed here are often issues that interest me and hence, would also be something that tech users come across in daily use etc. Apart from that, I like sharing and talking about news events which define technology across the world like – Apple WWDC or CES etc.

Q. What area or topic you generally cover in your blog, any special reason behind it?

OneKnightStands – covers Music, Movies, Bollywood, TV, Sci Fi, Anime and all other topics that interest me. Apart from these, I have recently started posting my own sketches as well.

Techkeyla – covers Tech issues/discussions, Gadgets, Wordpress tips, Excel tips, social media i.e. facebook, twitter etc, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and anything that comes under the Internet umbrella.

Q. Which blogging platform you are using (wordpress, blogspot, bloggers etc), any reason about it?

I use a self hosted wordpress platform. I did start blogging on BlogSpot, but the flexibility and independence that one gets out of Wordpress is second to none. The different plugins that I can use on wordpress is a big reason enough to switch over to wordpress.

Q. How frequent you update your blog? How many post your blog is carrying at present?

For both of my blogs, I tend to post 4-5 posts every month or more.

Currently,

  • OneKnightStands: 139 posts
  • Techkeyla: 179 posts

Q. What tools you use to increase your blog readership and bring people on your blog? Do you use social networking sites?

I use Wordpress plugins –

All in One SEO to handle all my metadata and title information
LinkWithin to display related posts
DISQUS plugin to manage my comments.
And yes, I do use facebook and twitter quite a lot.

Q. Any specific tips you have for new bloggers who want to make it in the blogosphere?

I don’t consider myself to have made it in the blogosphere yet. It is still a long way to go. But for people who want to blog and are still considering it, I would say, just be original and write something that you are genuinely interested in. There are millions of bloggers out there. So finding your personal identity in words is a must.

Q. Do you earn revenue through your blog? If yes, then how a blogger should monetize his / her blog? If no, then any plans in future?

I did try to earn revenue through my blog using Google Adsense but failed miserably. Users are intelligent enough to just browse through content without clicking on any of the ads.

If my viewing figures rise in the future, I intend to contact online advertisers on my own.

Q. What are your other favourite blogs which you follow, can you list the top 5 such blogs?

This is a long list, and it is very difficult to list down just 5, but if I had to:

a) Engadget.com

b) Lifehacker.com

c) io9.com

d) GreatBong.net

e) Labnol.org
