The Little Blogging World of Dhanya Venugopal

10 November 2009 5 Comments

“Write from your heart, and be nice to your readers. Try to reply to every comment you get in your blog.”

- Dhanya Venugopal

DhanyaIn the list of serious bloggers and yes expressive bloggers, we have our next blogger, Dhanya Venugopal, an engineer by profession and a blogger by heart. Dhanya founded My Own Little World in 2005.

In her own words, she says “For most of my life, I have been in Bahrain. I studied there till 12th, came back to India for my higher studies and then headed back to work in Bahrain for two years or so. I am back now in God’s own country, taking some time off and reconnecting with the place. I have always been interested in writing – be it poems, articles or story writing. Writing poems and stories have taken a back seat for now but I am enjoying blogging as never before. It made me a lot of new like-minded friends and if it wasn’t for blogging I would have never come across them. So I would say that apart from being a great platform to bring forth your views, blogging also helps you in meeting a lot of people who share your interests and thoughts”.

In interview with WebNeeTech, Dhanya shares more about her little world and the world beyond it.

Interview (Q&A Round)

Q. What motivated you to start blogging?

I used to be a major Internet addict even during my college days. I stumbled across this blog by a classmate’s sister. She wrote well and I used to leave her site with a smile on my face. This kind of motivated me to start as well. Unfortunately, she doesn’t blog anymore but I am glad I started blogging!

Q. Tell us in detail about your blog, your idea and how it can benefit others?

My blog records my personal thoughts on anything and everything that matters to me or interests me. It’s a personal blog so you will come across a lot of posts that are more close to life as opposed to fictional stories.

I get mails from readers every other day saying my blog makes them smile – so I would say that’s how it benefits others. Everyone has their own personal issues and problems, so I try to make my posts as funny and cheerful as possible to entertain the readers. I guess it has worked and people have been kind enough to keep visiting my blog.

Q. What area or topic you generally cover in your blog, any special reason behind it?

Since it’s a personal blog, the area of interest would be anything that matters personally to me. I can relate more to it and so can others.

Q. Which blogging platform you are using (wordpress, blogspot, bloggers etc), any reason about it?

I use blogspot. I find it really easy to use and it also supports a lot of widgets. I did try wordpress for a month or so but I found it a little confusing and returned to blogspot in no time.

Q. How frequent you update your blog? How many post your blog is carrying at present?

I try to update as often as I can. It’s important to keep updating but it’s also important not to overdo it especially if it’s a personal blog. Too much of anything is not good.

My blog currently has 181 posts. Too less as compared to other blogs and also considering the fact that I have been blogging since 2005. The reason would be that I started blogging properly only this year.

Q. What tools you use to increase your blog readership and bring people on your blog? Do you use social networking sites?

I do not use any tools as such. I don’t even use social networking sites to promote my blog! This shows how much I am into marketing. I do visit other blogs though because I love reading and after that I leave behind a comment whenever I find the post interesting. Entering your blog into blog directories can also help quite a bit.
Also try to keep your blog as reader friendly as possible. Use a good blog template and don’t put too many widgets as this can slow down your blog and not everyone is blessed with a fast internet connection. If in case a reader finds that your page is loading slowly, trust me they wouldn’t want to come back again.

Q. Any specific tips you have for new bloggers who want to make it in the
blogsphere?

Write from your heart, and be nice to your readers. Try to reply to every comment you get in your blog. This helps you in knowing your readers  better and even help you in getting a few new friends.

Q. Do you earn revenue through your blog? If yes, then how a blogger should monetize his / her blog? If no, then any plans in future?

Yes, I do get revenue through my blog. Why not milk the cow for all it’s worth? Earning could be either through clicking of ads or through the number of page impressions you get.

Keep in mind that unless you are as gifted as Steve Palina you won’t be able to earn much through ads.

If you do want to monetize your blog by posting ads, then keep it limited. Don’t put them all over your page. Nothing irritates a reader more. The best ad program to use would be of course, Adsense. Many of the programs other than Adsense require your blog to have more than 5K visitors.

But nothing ever beats the feeling of seeing lots of people commenting in your blog. That is priceless!

Q. What are your other favorite blogs which you follow, can you list the top 5 such blogs?

My favorite blogs would be –
