Q: How did you start your business? What made you to think to enter into a business?

I had more than 3 years of experience in different Internet businesses – spanning across product development, business development and online marketing. So once I had made the decision to take the entrepreneurial path, starting up wasn’t difficult.

My mind rebels at stagnation. Building out a business gives you just the right kind of mental satisfaction. So that has always been my primary motivation to start my own business.

Q: Tell us in detail about your business, your idea and how it can benefit others?

Workosaur is an online job board for senior positions – C-level, vice president, director and manager positions. We focus on aggregating the most lucrative jobs in India and overseas – i.e. jobs that pay more than Rs. 10+ lac per annum. The audience for Workosaur.com includes those who are eligible for jobs that pay more than Rs. 10 L per annum. And by my estimate, there are more than 1.5 million professionals in India who fall in this bracket and who could benefit from Workosaur.com. Naturally, our services will also help employers looking to recruit senior talent. Small and Medium-sized organizations that find it difficult to recruit talent will find our site particularly useful.

Also, what we offer is different from other job sites. First, we do not provide access to the resume database and so it is a more secure system for senior professionals seeking jobs. Second, we actively source jobs from the alumni communities and yahoogroups of top b-schools and engineering schools. Recruiters who use these groups prefer not to post their openings on the popular jobsites. Third, if you log on to workosaur.com you would see the simplicity in the user interface – right from the search and browse feature to the forms. Users (both employers and jobseekers) don’t have to fill in more than 3-4 fields anywhere.

Q: What are your expansion plans and where do you see your business 5 years down the line?

From a product standpoint, our core focus is to build a platform that makes it easier to match the right senior talent with the right companies. Then, a few commercial elements will soon be introduced on to the site and we’ve been gearing up for it. And while there is a well-charted 1-year and 2-year roadmap for Workosaur.com, I haven’t dared to think that far. Crystal-gazing can be counter-productive in the Internet industry thanks to the disruptive nature of technology. What’s important in this space is to build an agile team that can respond to changes.

Q: What were the biggest challenge(s) you faced in your journey as an amateur entrepreneur till now?

When I started off by myself, I was doing too many things together and task management was a challenge. But having got that right, the bigger challenge now is getting the revenue model right. There are some large players in the online recruitment space and as a relatively niche player it’s critical to have a differentiated model to be able to compete with them.

Q: What is the biggest mistake you made as an amateur entrepreneur?

First, I should have taken the plunge a lot earlier. Then even after I kicked off Workosaur, I spent a lot of time on other consulting assignments to earn my daily bread and to scale Workosaur.com. Most of these assignments were in product development and in the dot com space – but in different verticals. Perhaps, I should have focused on monetization opportunities that were better aligned with Workosaur.com than taking up these projects.

Q: What you want to say to the new entrepreneurs or the one who wants to start his/her own business?

Think about starting up only if you have an idea. Better still, try and validate the idea. Then pursue it.
